Papilio multicaudata - An aberration

Papilio multicaudata - freak

This  fine example of an aberration of Papilio multicaudata, was submitted by an American collector.
The colour change may in fact have been caused by "Melanism" which is due to a sudden temperature variation during the butterfly's pupal stage. Or it may have been caused by a prolonged dry period, or it may in fact have been caused by a deformity in some of it's genes that control colour. Whatever the cause it is an unusual specimen.
