A very striking medium sized Swallowtail with a relatively limited range in South America. Again this insect can often be seen "mud-puddling", drinking at small pools of water after rain showers on hot days. Sub Species P.paeon paeon - Ecuador, Bolivia and eastern Peru. P.paeon escomeli - Peru. P.paeon perugino - The Roque Region of Peru. P.paeon thrason - Colombia, Venezuela and southern Costa Rica. Sexes - Male as shown, female very similar. Similar Species - Can be confused with Papilio cresphontes, which ocurrs from the USA down to Colombia. Papilio paeon can be distinguished by the smaller orange discal patch on the underside of the hindwing. |
